When Gentlemen wore Hats

When Gentlemen wore Hats

Super. Love all the little details, the poppy, the pigeons, the pavement crack, the brolly, the newspaper, the AA badge etc etc

Some gentlemen still do wear hats - I have a small selection, and very natty I look in them. What I mourn is the passing of proper trousers, that fit you all the way up to the nipples, but I digress..... Delightful painting.

Another stunning piece of work.......you sure are gifted!!!!

Very skilful, detailed work Geoff, well done.

A stunning painting of a period in time that oozes class . As does this painting.

Stunning Geoff. Details, era, vehicle and the trousers would have had turnups surely?

Brilliant painting. Agree with Derek they would have had turnups and of course a pocket handkerchief. People still ask me why I wear a cap.

Fabulous Geoff and great style.

Fashion notes: A pedant writes - turn-ups were in vogue for a great many years, but I chanced upon a photograph of King George V a while ago, with the then Prince of Wales and the prime minister at the time, Asquith I think - I didn't notice Asquith's attire, but the King wasn't be-turned-up: so they weren't invariable although the photograph did probably date to around about 1913, so some twenty years earlier than the period shown above. Point is, I don't think they were invariable - I used to wear 'em (still would if I could find proper trousers) but there were plain-legged trousers available too. So I suggest these pedestrians are trend-setters of their day, striding boldly forth without turn-ups!

I love this painting Geoff, when men always looked amazing.. They look stunning :)

Thank you everyone for your positive comments and it is so pleasing my work gets such appreciation. I will try to find the original monochrome photograph of this subject and check the 'turn up' position on the trousers and report back. Just for the record I too am a keen hat wearer but only brimmed ones!! Geoff Storer

Hi again, I have unearthed the very grainy monochrome photograph on which this painting was based and as far as I can see, under a magnifying glass, the trousers do not have turn-ups. Regards G

As with the "Mrs Johnson" picture this painting captures a typical Bournemouth 1930's street scene in the style of that period. Family collection
