Boats, Ullapool by peter jones

Great portfolio of watercolours, but i thought i would choose the imposter to leave a comment on.....personally i think i prefer oil pastel to dry pastel....less messy and much underrated i reckon. In this one my eye is drawn between 2 focal points...1) the crossing of the ropes where lots of lines meet, and also 2) the solidity of the 'pulley' (probably has some alternative nautical name??) which takes your eye up to take in the distant houses. it's a nice composition....Steve

Steve, sorry this is a late response, I've been away for a few days. Thanks for your comments, they are much appreciated. This is still the only oil pastel I have tried as I am "into" watercolour. The oil pastel makes you treat a subject more broadly and impressionistically which can have advantages. (One thing I did have to do was reduce the number of ropes and lines!) I have painted this scene a number of times because I like the subject so much, but this is the one I like best. I will have to try and find out the proper name for the pulley, I will ask an aquaintance who has a prawn boat.
