Bude Canal Lock

Bude Canal Lock

All the canals in my area have been dredged and are navigable, I expect this will be eventually. Lovely work Peter, canals and lock gates make interesting subjects.

Thanks Alan. The canal was dredged a few years ago, but the sticking point to making it navigable is a low bridge further down that needs replacing or raising. Unfortunately the Canal enthusiasts ran out of money. The section beyond this low bridge is used by rowing boats and peddle boats which are hired from the canal basin.

I love the composition of this Pete, it has great depth and perspectives. The treatment of the undergrowth and the far distant trees on the left are super. I could look at this for ages....in fact I have! Certainly think it's one of your best watercolours to date.

Beautiful painting Pete, beautiful colours and depth. It looks a bit like oil.

As Fiona says, there is a good feeling of depth here. Good use of aerial perspective, with the tones and colours changing as we come forward, works well.

Watercolour on Waterford Rough paper. 140lb. 1/2 Imperial. I took this photo some time ago but never got around to painting it. I thought I'd rectify that today. The canal isn't navigable, but I believe that they open the locks occasionally to keep them working. A fairly limited palette of French Ultramarine, Cobalt Blue, Light red, Aureolin, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber. Just a few highlights with white gouache.
