Thanks for the detailed explanation Nigel. I have done very few aero paintngs but my Tornado was traced from a newspaper pic and transferred to the paper on a scale up. No problems with you method, smashing.

39x44 Oil on Canvas. Two Sea Harriers going on patrol 1982. I get the primary images by using a flight simulator and printing the screen when I get the right position for the aircraft, I then make a rough trace so I have an idea of position and then research the aircraft to get authentic markings etc make a final drawing and then trace this onto the canvas after laying an initial acrylic background before completing in oil.

I am self taught apart from a correspondence course in Commercial Art some 30 years ago. I tend to vary subject matter mainly because I still haven't focused although I do like to paint pictures with a story behind them when something comes to mind.
