This is WIP from some time ago and is elsewhere on the internet. I have changed my approach now mainly by dropping this careful drawing stage and investigating the face as I paint. The essentials the way I apply paint etc have always remained the same The paper is Fabriano Artstico Rough. I like to use rough paper for head and shoulder work, smooth papers bore me. The initial drawing from a photograph. Not traced not projected, a drawing simply to investigate the face and fix it into my hand and arm, looking and drawing probably took a day I really cannot remember. The edge marks are construction points helps me take diagonals to fix the focal eye position etc. I apologize for my poor photography.
