The Mona Lisa (after Leonardo) by Mike Rome

The Mona Lisa (after Leonardo)

This is raher good, although I suspect the eyes are different. However, I am remembering the paiting from when I was 14 and on a school trip to Paris. I was very disappointed with The Mona Lisa - it was a lot smaller than I had expected. I like your gallery and your paintings "in the style of". What has made you want to do them?

Thanks for your comments Gudrun - it's always good to get a response, whether good or bad. I have been painting with oils for about 30 years now and Renaissance art has been a favourite of mine for much of that time. I paint copies of Masterpieces to help improve my technique, both in the use of oils and realism. What better way than to do what the students of the famous painters did!

That's true. I must admit my liking for John Singer Sargent's watercolours. I went to see the exhibition in London called "Sargent and the Sea" and I went away feeling that the watercolours ought to have more prominence .... I haven't been painting seriously for very long; dabbled yes, but I am now feeling the need to create. I couldn't paint in oils like you - yet!? Carrying on from the Old Masters, there is a drawing by Leonardo of a hand that is probably more beautiful than the real hand. It's amazing! Perhaps I ought ot stop rabitting on!

Fulfill that need Gudrun. All the best.

Oil on board (framed) 405 mm x 305 mm 2011 I have (as have many others) attempted to capture the famous enigmatic smile, but after making numerous changes during the course of the painting, still feel dissatisfied with the result. However, I had no intention to continue with painting for as long as Leonardo in order to achieve perfection!
