The Death of Chatterton (after Wallis) by Mike Rome
Oil on board (framed) 622 mm x 933 mm (visible) 900 mm x 1200 mm (frame) 2013 The original painting by Henry Wallis (1830-1916), was a sensation at the Royal Academy in 1856. It is one I have wanted to copy for some time, and it will be my last copy of a famous painting. My work is approximately the same size as the original, which is in Tate Britain. The subject of the painting, Thomas Chatterton, was an 18th Century poet who spent much of his short life in Bristol's St Mary Redcliffe church where his uncle was sexton. He died at the age of seventeen from arsenic poisoning, assumed as suicide. This has a special interest for me as St Mary Redcliffe church is only a short walk away from where I live in Bristol.
