Always good to branch out and try something new, if only to keep from getting stale with one's usual subjects. I have been doing that by trying out pen and wash as a change and I think it does free the mind up. I do like the freedom and spontaneity of this painting with the dark background showing up the pale green leaves very successfully. A definite success.

Really like the looseness of this painting. Great

This works well Michael, I decided some time ago that flowers were not my 'thing' but always enjoy viewing floral watercolours.

The tonal contrasts really make this sing, Michael, stealing Stephen's phrase from his recent comment on my gallery but it's just the right one. I particularly like the light on the top left leaf. Did you paint first and do the pen work second?

Thanks all. Caroline - yes the pen work wes kut in after the painting. The secret is in just flicking the pen in roughly the right pkaces. am not so keen on pen work first as this tends to tighten the work and make it a bit like painting by numbers in that you fill in the 'holes'.

Very different for you Michael but very appealing with the complimentary colours and pen work. I know what you mean about not wasting off cuts of mountboard, I put a pastel ground on mine and use them for soft pastels, never tried watercolour though must give it a go.

Thanks Val - the only trouble with mount board is that the pigment seems to soak in straight away making graded washes etc a bit of a problem. See my comments above - I am afraid the letters on my keyboard have worn away and I keep pressing the wrong keys - must get a new one! Managed ok this rime - sorry - time!!!

Change is a good thing Michael, always good to see your paintings whatever subject.

A lovely piece, Michael. Different in terms of subject matter, but the same beautiful washes and excellent technique.

Another one a bit out of character - watercolour on mountboard - well I don't like wasting the off-cuts
