The acute observer by Michael Hanrahan
I wanted to paint a child with great intelligence for her years. Someone who had seen the evil that men do and watched, a silent observer, without fear, without judgement. A child with an independant spirit and a will to continue, unbroken and determined, a mere child, and yet maybe one of a generation who hold the key. Its a different message than the one i tried to convey through joseph merrick. This child is an innocent but she has witnessed much and will take her lessons through to maturity. Trying to capture all this in one simple glance is very difficult to do. I tried to give the slightest hint of accusation in her eyes. She is afterall too young to register fully this world and all its corruption.
