Drawing with pencil on grey paper by Michael Hanrahan

Michael - if your boards are marked in inches, buy frames in inches; if in cm, buy in cm: they should be exactly the same size, but they never are. And it is indeed very frustrating - I too get wound up by these things and get angry and depressed - and put off - by them. It's just the way we're built. At least we can crop drawings on paper: and - I like this one.

Well said Robert and this is a good drawing Michael too

Great sketching Michael.

I've had the same problem with frames Michael, it's really annoying. I tell myself not to let it get to me...but it does. This is a good drawing.

Nice sketch!

This is a lovely sketch of a rose 🌹

Thankyou so very much for these very nice and supportive comments. I thought I might be making a big deal out of something little but I see my fellow artists often run into the same problems which helps me very much to know. Yes I agree Robert maybe I should go more for cm than inches it's more exact ofcourse. Thankyou again for this kind support.

This is a super sketch Michael, roses are really hard to draw. I mostly have my work professionally framed, I know it costs more, but it eliminates the board and frame problems. Otherwise, buy a piece of MDF or plywood and cut it to your frame size, gesso it, then do your painting!

Thankyou frank that's good advice. I actually bought a canvas roll just recently and nice to be able to have more choices in terms of size and even shape ofcourse.

Good sketch Michael.

I've had to take a break from paint since I'm finding it quite stressful. I ordered frames for some paintings only to find my canvas boards wouldn't fit in them despite the measurements being the same so very unsure whether the boards or frames are out. It's no big deal really but I often take things very badly. Too sensitive. Unfortunately my niece is like me and also interested in art.

About the Artist
Michael Hanrahan

I love art but it's very much up and down as I go about my day to day life as a painter and often I really struggle to paint therefore I fall out with it. You're only as good as your last painting as they say. My greatest love is music and I prefer to write classical music for orchestra than paint…
