Oil. There was a documentary called dancing through darkness which was about the last days of rudolf nureyev. He played petrushkha during his hey day. This is more universally representative though of anyone trying to get through the darkness and forced to smile or dance or laugh though the darkness is killing them. The story of the puppet is tragic so its appropriate.
