Not only oil, but very thin oil - and indeed why go on adding layer on layer if you achieve the result you want without doing so? This works.

Thankyou very much. In answer to you Robert I drew the image first in charcoal and did the shading to completion. Then once I'd fixed the drawing I finished it with a single very thin glaze. So yes you are right. Very thin paint. It's all a learning curve.
