Really atmospheric sky Mel, i really like this, and you have achieved fantastic with oil (which i find impossible to use) excellent painting :-)

Both of your sky postings are very effective Mel, and it seems you're doing well with the water mixable oils. I love the colours in this one, very subtle. I went the other way - from the water mixable to the more traditional, which I personally prefer, but then the water ones are so much more convenient for travelling, so it's going to be a bit of both for me.

Thanks for your comments Rebecca and Jane. I am playing around with the water soluble oil for the same reason - convenient. especially if playing in water colour as well - which i am and for the traveling around. They are of course less pungent as well. But i have to agree with you Jane i definitely prefer the oily oils - stronger texture and so much more flexible on the canvas.

The changeable weather seems to be affording us with some fantastic skies and as I'm never that confident about doing that extra ordinary backdrop I thought I would have a go. Also this is a first attempt at using water soluble oils. I think they have a different feel to oil-oils, though some people say they don't. I didn't go expensive though, so it might be the quality of the paint? I would be interested to know other peoples views. I also used pretty cheap canvas boards- way too grainy for me and this probably shows through in this and my my next painting. it's all learning though;)
