Max by Mary Mccormack

Hi Mary, nice painting but your right, the colour of the background doesn't do the fella justice really. It's too similar. As his coat has a little reddish tint to it you could try a dark green background (complimentory colours) , then make it lighter nearer 'Max', but not quite as pronounced.This would make him stand off the board a little more i think. Just a few thoughts. I like it though mate. He has the look about him.

Hi Mary, I like your painting of Max, a good effort. As Chris says, maybe a different background would help. May I ask, did you paint Max first, then the background ? I know it's too late now, but I would have perhaps started with a lighter coloured wash the full width of the canvass, getting darker towards the lower area of the painting. My son in law has 3 working spaniel gun dogs and keeps asking when I'm going to have a go at painting them, so..........maybe.
