Thank goodness not a poem in sight!!, You are right curiouser and curiouser and that cat is not one I would like to meet on a dark night, Well done.

Quite disturbing Lew but as usual very accomplished ,I think if these had been the original illustrations it would have been a horror story and not the well loved children’s story it is .

Thou doth protest too much, the colour looks fine on those panels in my opinion. I like the first and last panels best but they each have something to offer.

You'rer a brave (and very talented) man for even attempting these Lewis. To me, there's always a certain ominous hint of doom in black and white works, and few laughs. Bearsdley, Durer etc. That said, you do it all so very well.

Wasn't it Tenniel who originally illustrated the books? As I remember, they were very much in the Lewis Cooper idiom - somewhat .... I was going to say alarming, but perhaps I mean unsettling. I think it was the Disney adaptation of the stories that gave us the softer, rounder, friendlier characters - with the possible exception of the Queen, who bore a striking resemblance to a primary school teacher I once knew: and not only in looks... I think actually you've gone back to the spirit of the books with these - the Victorian mix of children's story and gothic elements.

I've never thought the original versions of these books were that child friendly...older children maybe. The books have dark elements, a theme that goes back to most so called fairy tales. Thank you all for your comments.

I also think Charles Lutwidge Dodgson was bit of a suspect character . Yes Tenniel was one of the illustrators there were several . But a lot off illustrators of that era were a bit spooky , Arthur Rackham, Aubrey Beardsley. I think Lew is just carrying on a tradition. Why not ?

Sylvia's named two artists I admire...Beardsley and Rackham...I look at their work all the time. Whilst I don't copy them, I can hardly fail to be influenced by them. You expect it of Beardsley, but it's mildly surprising that Rackham can be dark as well...it's as Robert says, the Victorians/Edwardians had a different take on children's books.

Very talented Lewis. Dark and Gothic, yes but as said fairy tales could be unsettling.

Total agreement with all the previous comments. A college friend did her thesis on the mathematics involved in Alice....another take on this surreal book!

Your work always brings a smile to my face Lewis.

Very strange Lewis, but very clever at the same time!

Wow you should have illustrated the book Lewis, and I am not joking.

The Alice stories are popular with illustrators and artists. I've had a few tries. This time I made a point of not using reference material. This brings it's own problems. Not entirely satisfied with it. It's pen and ink, with a thin wash of watercolour. I like this method, all the work is done with the pen, it takes moments to add the wash. It was a mistake to use colour washes on the central panels, it would look better all black and white (or all one colour).

About the Artist
Lewis Cooper

Self taught. Love drawing. Like to make pictures up, without using reference pics, often in cartoon style. I do other pictures where I do use reference. I'm knocking on a bit, born in 1940 in Greenwich, London. Retired, and loving it.
