I've not been to Oz either, but you were right about the stronger colour - indeed, you could go a good deal stronger yet; don't know if you've seen pictures of the land around Ayer's Rock (not normally called that now, but age has banished the name from my mind temporarily): it's a really strong, orange-red; given the extremes in the continent, and a box full of pastels, you could go slightly mad....
