Even though you’re not quite happy with the result of your colours Amanda, it’s a lovely watercolour. Your sea is especially good and I like the way you have mixed your wet in wet washes on the cliffs. I was given a colour mix by Alan Bickley on this site who suggested a mix of Indigo and light red. It makes a lovely grey and I use it all the time now.

It's a lovely painting.

Well done Amanda! Really like your water especially. Perhaps it's a different version of one of the colours, but these don't look far away to me, actually. (The red shade Thalo is the one, rather than the green shade, but brands always vary a bit, too - and whether it's Student or Professional range.) I'd say that distant headland is definitely a 'cool grey' and the right-hand cliff is a 'warm grey'. That most central bit of cliff above the trees I would say it absolutely a neutral grey, but perhaps our eyes sense these things differently. Keep up the good work!

Amanda Harvey sent in her painting saying: 'I tried very hard to use the colours recommenced by Jem, but unfortunately I just could not get the phthalo blue and Indian red to make the right shades. I definitely could not get anywhere near a grey. I wonder if I have the wrong shade of Phthalo blue?'
