Many of them, including my father, had their photographs taken at around this time. It's their youth that gets you, which you have conveyed well. Just a macabre thought: if von Rundstedt had been allowed to follow his natural military instincts and wipe out the expeditionary force on the beaches of Dunkirk, you wouldn't be here today - and neither would I.
