Watercolour. As an ex police officer from the 70s, 80s, and 90s, I tried to convey here what could be a violent and devious police culture at that time. For Egon Bittner, policing is a tainted profession. The police are ‘….the fire it takes to fight fire’ (Bittner, 1970/1990:96). Thus, the police represent the force opposed to predatory violence while, at the same time, they are also perpetrators of it (Brodeur, 2010). The police as crime controllers and as criminals presents a mirror image for Brodeur. He theorizes the role of the police and uses the concepts of ‘discordance’ and ‘antinomy’ to apply his theory of policing.
