Great narrative Michael, and nicely painted too. How many towns and cities followed this ciriteria, a sign of bygone times.

Thanks Andre. You're right, the state was/is everywhere, even Mold, and reminds us of our contract with it to behave. I've always worked for it and am grateful to it still. And I also like the devil juice, there's no real criticism here of The Court Inn. My aunt Mary was the licencee in the 30s and 40s.

Yes that is a great narrative and very interesting. A lovely well observed painting too Michael.

Yes your words give great meaning to this super study Michael

Thanks very much Carole and Michael.

Powerful words Michael. I didn't realise all these buildings were next to each other. My only visit to Durham was to see that magnificent Cathedral. A lovely painting.

Thanks Adele. Another way this kind of state power has been described, in particular hanging (and historically, criminals were hanged outside Durham Prison) is 'a terrible beauty'. A bit morose for a Thursday morning. Some good news this morning is that our Elle is going back home today. She is a terrible beauty and has been with us since last Saturday. Madame McManus and I are exhausted. I half joke of course. Terrible but very nice.

I meant Wednesday morning. What of it, I'm 70?

Oh dear, I also thought it was Thursday Michael!! Still you have an excuse if you are exhausted! We visited the granddaughters for a few days last week as it was Zoe's 2nd birthday - we came home for a rest!!!

I know. We don't have the two girls together now 'cause they fight and we can't manage it, so when Elle returns today chances are Isla will ask to come. Perhaps a blood transfusion would help us.

The painting has turned out well - I love the treatment of the sky. I have added this to my Pinterest page for paintings of Durham City. Here is the link:- https://uk.pinterest.com/malcolmcoils/durham/

Thanks for the compliment Malcolm. I visited the page. What a variation on a theme the cathedral paintings are.

Watercolour. The state in uniform, the state in robes, the state in vestments and the devil drink. Durham City, historical centre of the industrial north east of England. The Prison, The Church, The Crown Court, the Police Station, all together in the city centre within 100 yards of each other. And right in the centre is The Court Inn pub where the devil sees them in and the devil sees them out.
