Hi, Barrie . I was drawn to this after seeing your interesting brightly coloured ropes on the from page. I could not resist looking when I saw the title 2014. The whole is very Garrowby Hill. Do you use acrylics? I think they would suit your style.

Spot on. I took a lot of inspiration from Garrowby Hill. For the road I mirror-imaged the road in the foreground of Garrowby Hill. I've been very much inspired by Hockney since visiting his exhibition at the Royal Academy last year. I used to paint in oils, but fortuitously discovered my work was better when pastelled, when I bought a small box of pastels to do some outside sketching.

This is an imaginary view of the Tour de France pelaton speeding downhill in the countryside. It was painted to celebrate the award of the Start in 2014 to Yorkshire. The country itself is ambiguous. It could be France or England. The white cliffs could be those of France or Dover; the chateau is clearly French, but there's an English house, too. The lavender fields could be those of Provence or of Norfolk. The idea is to portray the spirit of this Anglo-French event. Well, it's French really. The artistic influences clearly include Hockney and some Cezanne. Who else, I wonder?
