Evergreen oaks grow all along by the promenade here on the South Coast, but they are scruffy, scraggy, gnarly specimens compared to those in botanical gardens. They have acorn-like fruits and the leaves change from bright green when just unfurled to dark olive, almost black. Sometimes also called 'Holm Oak', this tree is in fact a Holly or Ilex. I chose to take a small twig with immature acorns and drew it in coloured pencil on white cartridge paper. 8 x 10 inches.
