Excellent painting- what is the texture in the foreground? Gesso or modelling paste?

Thank you all so much for your brilliant feedback. I think what I have done over the years is use less and less colours, less and less brushes and fewer brush strokes and have ended up here. Malcolm its a mix of the two almost, I do change it sometimes. The basic idea is that you are painting on a surface that's not kind, it stops you fiddling!!
