I don't know Blockley but will now look him up - love this painting - so simple with with so much interest. That patch of prussion (?) blue is inspired.

Hi Thea, it probably was prussian blue, back then I loved it, still do, and I used to paint with all the sienna, and umbers, but now i try to use the 6 primary colours (hansa yellow, cad orange, quin magenta, french ultramarine blue, thalo blue(g/s) and thalo green (y/s). You can get all the colours in the rainbow from these, including beautiful burnt sienna and cobalt blue. Once you discover JG Blockley you will never think of watercolours in the same way..! Thanks for your feed back. P.S. I have new web site coming out later this week, www.joehargreavesart.com so keep your eyes open. x

This is a beautiful piece and thanks for the info..

Beautiful painting, and I too don't know Blockley and will be looking for his work.

I have a few books by JG Blockley and I love his work, it was so sad when he died. This is a lovely Joe, love those squiggly pen marks. Great colours too.

Thanks Carole, perhaps we can start a JG Blockley fan club? He needs to be remembers because his style was so emotionally engaging and full of fabulous abstracts.

I think there's no danger of Blockley being forgotten because, once you've seen his work, you just don't forget it. If you and Carole are starting a fan club, count me in! Excellent copy (I don't actually know this painting, but from what you've said I assume it is pretty close to the original) and you can see what made his approach distinctive - the use of strong line work, touches of pen and ink, dramatic composition. It probably would have been Prussian Blue he used - I still like to use it with strong subjects requiring a cool, and even cold, touch.

Thanks all, I have started a Blockley-Blog. Here is the link: http://jgblockley-blog.blogspot.com/

Marvellous stuff. Joe - love your vibrant colours & lively style. This is possibly the least vibrant and colourful - but possibly my favourite. That's art - your punters are such fickle folk :)

I guess its more about the mood....thats the great thing about watercolour.
