The Queenslander - Old house #5
The primary reason for the development of the Queenslander was the climate. The long hot summer days often ended with a torrential downpour and the steep iron roof with wide verandahs lent itself to an informal semi-outdoor lifestyle suited to the climate. The cool space underneath the house on stilts allowed the air to pass underneath. The first Queenslander houses were built in 1850, and today remain one of Australia’s most distinct regional architecturetypes.
