Well I think your experiment with the background works terrifically. Gives it a modern twist and I think it looks stunning.

Watercolour (not a very good photo). The background was a bit experimental on this one and I'm not sure that it has worked very well, and the hare's head isn't quite the right shape (but it did sell at a club exhibition, so someone must have liked it).
