Hi Janet...I think you have divided your landscape into planes, and as such you are approaching the abstract, in simplifying the shapes and contours like this. This has a nice flow to it, however, and I quite like it.

I can't immediately think of a better way of describing the style than the one you've chosen, except maybe simple as opposed to simplistic, because the latter implies over simplification. It may be semi-abstract, but it's not abstract; it's not primitive; maybe it's a pity that "plain" and "plane" are spelled differently, picking up Ruth's point ... that would work rather well. Interesting approach, anyway - you capture the rolling nature of the Devon countryside.

This reminds me of some of my own work, which I wouldn't want to think is simple or simplistic! I prefer the word "clear". There is a relationship to the recent landscapes by Hockney and work by Ludvigsen, who has a website easily googled. Anyway, I like it. What/where is the Artgallery website?

Thanks for your comments Barrie. I will look at the website you mention, Artgallery.co.uk is a website for artists to sell their work. I hope they appreciate me mentioning them! Janet D

Your painting of Exeter on the front page today led me to this one in your portfolio. I just love it. I am just starting out (in acrylics and painting) and am making a list of those pictures in painters-online that may help me find my own style. I will add this one to the list if I may.

You certainly may Sian. Thanks for your comments. I think my style changes with every painting although I have been painting for years. I still paint one that I'm pleased with and several that get tucked away in the attick. Some times I can see what was wrong later, other times they get painted over or go in the recycling bin. Good luck and happy Christmas. janet.

I was exploring a different style, which I am calling simplstic. The colours are as seen in Devon in spring and summer. The shapes and slopes are more imaginative. Comments and a better way of describing the style welcome before I add to ArtGallery web site.
