I've taken to using the bus to get to one of the places I work, it's less stressful and gives time for quick chracter sketches. It is a bit risky though, I was viewed with great suspicion as she watched me (it was't her I was drawing). About 15 years ago I enrolled for evening portarit classes, and attended regularly for seven years,. I'm grateful to my tutor for teaching me to look, and her insistence on 5 minute "quickies!"
