Moody blues

Comments

Jacky....you have some wonderful atmospheric effects in your watercolour .....excellent.

I always look out for your comments. They are very uplifting and always give me something to think about.

Jacky, I can tell you that I look deep into your paintings, I examine your washes, I want see how you have achieved them. I’m envious of the loose and organic flow of them! The sky is very natural but dramatic but it’s the water that I love, together with the small amount of foreground. Works wonderfully.

Thankyou for your comments on the water. I start with a lot of very large brush strokes and then add other colours into the mix that I can see in the main picture to give a shadowing and balance as well as light. I try to keep away from masking fluid in the waves as it's not very effective for me. I prefer to keep some white areas as I go. I build on the base colour and use wet on wet to add a second , third or fourth colour and wave effect until the wave/ water effect looks alive and real. I try to add a darkness into the mix for atmosphere and this seems to strengthen the look of the wave. If i have used unusual colours like turquoise or purples i try to match its opposite to again add to the effect. I have a half inch brush with a chizzled edge which angles the wave and gives an unevenness to the colour that adds to the effect. Its my favourite brush and really holds the paint. I also like to almost follow the line of a wave with the brush when I'm covering the page to bring it alive. I'm very much into my turquoise when it comes to water. I love the effect it has especially when I add a dark grey or ultra marine blue with it.
