I think all the works in this gallery are superb Ian. Dont really think of them as in any way absract though, impressionistic maybe. Were they always long and thin or have you cropped, if so it really has been very effective. Karen

Superb gallery Ian

I love the lightness you have captured in this one against the darker sides.

Abstact or not abstact that is the question. In retrospect I think I have used the wrong word here. It is possibly more to do with the execution rather than the final outcome. Whereas the traditional watercolours that I have posted tend to be planned before painting ( I actually hardly draw at all but just use pencil lines to give me a composition ) these are based on very loose washes and I dont decide on the scene until the wash has dried. In other words I look for the composition in the wash so there are always parts of the painting open to imagination and interpretation. Although the format for these was deliberate the idea originally came by accident. I had been demonstrating at an exhibition and having completed a painting I had a long thin strip at the bottom of the paper which led to a wash, some doodles and an idea to develop. Hope these comments answer your questions. Ian

Second in this portfolio. The initial washes helped to create the light coming through from the distance. Like the first of these it is painted in a semi-abstract style with strong colours in the foreground.
