Stone Sentinel Moughton
WS Oil on Canvas 18" x 14". This stone cairn can be found upon Moughton Fell, a vast expanse of bare limestone interspersed with shallow-soil grasses and heather. I have tried to depict a fairly eroded limestone pavement outcropping through the mat of sedge grass on this upland fell with the characteristic shape of the Ingleborough massif in the background. This cairn is situated at the top of long scar and stands about 6ft high. I don't know who built it or why, possibly as a marker, possibly by a very bored shepherd; however it does feel to be fairly old, and quite substantially built to have endured the elements on this limestone plateau.
