These were the first tulips I got my hands this year, and I painted them over and over until they completely wilted. It was really fascinating to see how the colours and shapes of the flowers changed as they decayed, the greens becoming pale and creamy, the flower heads becoming dark and twisted. I've stopped discarding my flowers now, which is all a bit Miss Havisham, but offers a whole new angle on the floral still-life theme.
