Interesting approach - try varying sizes of palette knife: they work especially well with oil, although it's a great way to use an enormous amount of expensive paint. My happiest results in acrylic came from using a quantity of mixing white, to 'carry' the paint: Winsor and Newton's is especially useful. Stroke the paint on sideways as well: the strong gestural marks can be a bit tedious if they're all in one direction.
