Wow, for someone who has never painted a horse before, this is great. The horse's expression is wonderful and you get a real sense of the flighty nature of the horse. It looks like it's about to gallop off. I too have just taken up painting after a youth spent pencil drawing. I think your painting career will be a good and long one.

A very good first painting of a horse; notoriously difficult for anyone to do. The muscle structure in the neck is particularly well done and the wide eyes and flaring nostrils make it look as if it's about to take flight.. May I suggest you think abut toning down your background, especially near the sky, so that it doesn't overpower the subject. Using lighter colours and blurred focus for far hills gives a greater impression of distance.

This is the first time I have painted a horse and the first time working with canvas. I found it a very sympathetic medium - very forgiving of mistakes! Comments / critique most welcome. I am very much a beginner, have no training and have only ever painted these two works in the gallery; although I sketched a bit years ago and had a little flirtation with pastels in the late ninetees. Thankyou!
