I was on holiday with my Family in Las Vegas last October, at the Mandalay Bay Hotel. I took photos of the pool at the back of the hotel, initially because I liked the interplay between the water, the building at the forefront, and the hotel tower at the back. I always found the size of these towers to be imposing, but this time I also felt intimidated, as it is the tower from which the shooting happened in October the year before. I live in London, so it was odd seeing this in person. The painting is different from how the place really was that day: the umbrellas were open, and the area was buzzing with families on holiday. I did not include any of it. I simplified the scene, accentuated the shadow on the tower, painted all the umbrellas closed, and spaced them evenly as if they were red figures standing in vigil. The title is Red October.
