Really nice work David, fantastic sky, really like the furled sails and as you say that little touch of red for the flag, great painting.

Smashing watercolour David. I tend to agree with you regarding the barges looking better on the mud.

They are a lovely vessel and you have made a nice picture with this one.

Thanks for all your kind comments, I can't wait to be in Suffolk later this month. I may even paint Thames Barges outdoors (if I can hold back the tide for an hour or two!)

I think Thames Barges look even better on the mud than afloat. Their flat bottoms make them look perfectly at home there, more so than boats with keels at their "falling over" angles. I also think the distinctive red-brown sails look better in a picture when they're furled. Last to go in my paintings of Thames Barges is the bob flag, with just a flick of cadmium red.
