SS Melika on fire
When the SS Melika collided with the Fernand Gilabert in 1958 off the entrance ti the Persian gulf, we went to the rescue. Here she is stopped and on fire and with her crew abandoned. A Whirlwind helicopter of 845 Naval Air Squadron from HMS Bulwark is ferrying firefighters on to the wreck. Fires out, we towed her into the port of Muscat and received salvage money, the highest ever received by the Royal Navy up to then. The tow took about 8 days as the Melika was dead in the water
