Hi Chris, I agree with your comment about the tree. Love the recession of colour in the shadows. A very nice painting indeed. By the way I have come across some a couple of good articles from Artist Magazine in the Features: Watercolour: Landscape: Easy Watercolour Landscape Painting( by John Hoar) & How to paint English Coutryside Landscape ( by STeve Hall). They both contain tips on rendering buildings in countryside settings.

May I endorse Olga's comment on John Hoar. And I think I also agree about the tree - I would have been inclined to take an axe to it. All the same, your painting has tonal strength, which I think you would have found it easier to render without the tree in the way. I should have been inclined to strengthen the shadows on the building itself, to enhance the three dimensional effect ("should have been inclined to" doesn't mean I would actually have done it!). But then, you can take another crack at it - it wouldn't take much to improve this, because it's already a good painting.

nice work but i disagree about the tree,if was there then paint it,well thats my thought anyway. I know this pub very well and the surrounding area as i live near here. There are some great views just up the road looking down from corley moor over beduff. once again nice painting mate.

Came back for another look - tried to visualize this without the tree; and damned if I don't think I was wrong about it, now..... Quite what this proves, I don't know ..... but often, taking another look at something does enable a more considered view; which is why it's often a good idea to leave a painting for a while, hide it away, then come back: you either see what was wrong, and can put it right, or surprise yourself that actually, you DID get it right in the first place.

10"x7". Another of my locals. I am trying to lay on less paint to achieve a more transparent effect. A lot of my paintings are too vivid. Also I wish I had used a bit of artistic license and omited the tree in front of the main entrance. I feel this spoils the image. Never mind, I only spent 2 hours on this one.
