I like it very much Cesare, especially the way you have mastered the tones and depth of the skin. I can see the accuracy from your photo. and you should be very pleased with it; difficult paper or not.

Not heard of that paper before but well done indeed for getting to grips with it. Lovely self portrait Cesare and such a wonderful tonal range on your Mediterranean olive skin.

A great portrait - so distinguished Cesare

Yes great one Cesare a paper can take years to get accustomed

I love the silky feel of Magnani paper too, but I think it is perhaps more for sketching and/or pen and ink. I know your challenge putting watercolor to it - but you have met the challenge handsomely as is the subject. Great self portrait Cesare. Fresh and light, transparent washes; great eyes!! nose and skin tones :)

what a handsome young man, excellent self portrait Cesare not bothered about mistakes they are part of the charm of this painting

Very nice, Cesare. Lovely skin tones and a very friendly portrait

Good portrait with nice tones Cesare.

Thank you all for your very generous comments and encouragements about my challenge with this new paper. You are all very kind and friendly.

A lovely portrait Cesare. The skin tones are really good and I love the mauve shadows in your beard. If I was only 10 years younger!!

Very distinguished Cesare

It's well constructed caesare. You have got the cure on the face perfectly through good observation of the eyes and nose. The left hand side of the facial hair does not seem to work. Lacks some construction, to give it form. It may have looked flat Ceasare but as you told me. Artist can use there artistic licence. Other wise it's a good piece of work and I would say you might well feel a step forward. And rightly so. Practice makes perfect and here is the reward.

The strength of this I think is in the expression Cesare. I get a sense of you through the gaze.

Meny thanks Adele, Russel and john for your kind comments much appreciated. Hi Adele, I made this portrait from a photo that my son took yesterday, but I am not so young as you think, I am born in 1948. Hi John, thank you for your detailed comment. I like loose paintings and I haven't the patience to paint for hours on end the same subject. Therefore I don't give a lot of importance to the hairs that I made looser than the face. An hour and a half for a portrait is far too much for me, then I get annoyed.

A great portrait Cesare that you can be proud of.

Many thanks Marjorie and Satu.

I think it a great painting regardless of what paper you have used! Great tones. Your facial hair is not troubling me! It's your eyes, face and expression that is of importance. In any case, there is enough of a suggestion of your beard to make it work.

A lovely portrait.

Many thanks Gudrun and Ellen for your kind comments.

Watercolour on Magnani paper 100% cotton 140 lb. 24 x 31 cm. This is a portrait filled of mistakes because of a paper very hard to manage. It absorb very quickly. and irregularly the colours that you can't no more take off.
