Excellent illustration David. We often see both species of wood Peckers outside our house on the summer. Usually pecking at the ants along side the footpath.

An ink and watercolour pencil sketch of this iconic bird. We used to see one in our back garden but unfortunately our next door neighbour cut down the tree which the bird used to use to peck on - hence no more!
