I recognized the picture immediately. The colours give the impression of the night life. I like it better than the other but it is my own opinion.

Thanks Beatrice - first of all I'm glad you recognised it! I agree that the blue tones are better to convey the idea of nightlife. I was also trying to convey the dominance of men over women in those days and especially in a waitress/client bar environment. For that reason, I originally went for pure black angular figures for the men and symbolically curved and lighter coloured figures for the women.

I like both, but I think this has a slight edge, Kat.I love the combination of colors, and the shapes stand out really well against the neon background. It's a thought provoking piece.

Thanks Seok Yam Chew for your comments. Yes, I think this version illustrates better the more sinister and atmospheric aspects of Manet's painting. I believe he was well-known for powerful social comment in his paintings. Wish I could emulate his actual style, but that is way beyond my ability! AKS

I like both too.. love the colours and quite interesting interpretation..

Another take of a somewhat dark interpretation of Manet's magificient masterpiece. Do you think there is any social comment here? If so, which version expresses it best?
