Winter wood

Winter wood

It always impresses me when people make a good painting from a very simple scene. You have concentrated on the shadows and shapes and it works so well. Nice work.

This is quite stylised, but works well.

This is just stunning. I am so much in the shape and lines. We need to talk a bit more on this subject. Thanks for your kind comments on my latest painting. You know that I am really not happy with that piece. Best regards..

Thanks very much Thea, Jo and Yu Ping for your comments. This was very much intended to be an exercise in shape and design. It is based on an actual photograph of a wood with amazing 'parallel' shadows on snow caused by the density of the trees I guess. I went for the interacting shapes of the curving shadows and curving trees. I left some areas blank because I thought it looked better, whereas in the photograph the shadow curves covered the whole surface. Thanks again Would be happy to discuss any ideas.

I love the surreal nature of the branches with thier hands they look like they are having a conversation. a striking composition. the snow reminds of the old stripey fanelette sheets but in a good way !!

Thanks Helen, Yes it was the trees and the undulating shapes of the shadows that first attracted me to the image - which I then exaggerated to emphasise the interconnections.Flanelette is a good description!. Glad you liked it.

This is beautiful! As you know, I am a bit obsessed with trees and forests.

Thanks squirrel and all. I also think trees and forests are a great subject. Especially if you try to extract the essence of them rather than depicting everything in a purely figurative sense. I remember the great storms (1987/89 ?) in the south of England and the devastation they caused to our once proud, tall trees. I wasn't painting then but tried to compose a poem to describe our fallen heroes, without much success. I think it would have made a good subject for someone with the skills to make the most of it.

excellent, love it, joyful and peaceful, picture it anyway you like. Artistic licence here, well done.

A stylised depiction of winter shadows in a wood. The blues are generally darker and more vivid in the painting, but I can't get an exact match with my camera/software.
