Excellent watercolour achieving a canny balance of detail and lightness of touch. The railings on the left leads the eye into the subject.

A great painting and composition

This is absolutely brilliant. I love it. How did you do the white bits such as the railings and the seagulls against the dark trees and the wall? Did you use masking fluid or is it white gouache?

Thank you everyone: Margaret, to answer your question about the seagulls and railings etc. I used a scalpel to scratch most of them in against the darker background. I use the same technique to scratch detail into oils and acrylics. It is then possible to tone them down with a touch-up or wash. It doesn't do the surface of the paper much good though.

I enjoyed a recent holiday in Jersey and you have caught the atmosphere so well here. Much better then the sketches I did there!

superb painting, Anthony, great balance in colour and composition.

Beautiful watercolour Anthony, I love the sunlight on the houses and railings.

You have captured the scene, beautifully. And thanks for sharing your 'scratching' technique.

Super picture.

Watercolour I did a few years ago when holidaying on the island.
