It was certainly not a late afternoon like many others and not even that autumn was like many others who had preceded it. Along Hampsted High Street, as the damp and gloomy day slowly died away, few wandered, some aimless, others without a soul mate next to them, still others confused and frightened. A different, strange, melancholy and damned afternoon.
