Stray away ... you don't want a carbon copy, after all. Strong tones in the foreground help to create a sense of distance - you don't want to rely on that as a formula, because all your pictures will start to look the same, but in this case I think a few strong shadows in the foreground would have helped. (Isn't it easy to give other people advice??? So much easier than taking it yourself .......)

I don't know the painting by JFW, but I like yours very much, Ann. I think Robert is right about the shadows or dark grasses in the foreground to give depth or did you crop it for the photo?

Thank you both for bothering to comment. I think I agree about the need for stronger foreground, but, looking at some of JFW's work they do seem to emphasis the midtones. Will have another go.
