Not sure if the expletive is needed, but I like this painting and it coveys the peaceful heat of a sultry day when only mad dogs and English men go out. I agree that as the subject of the painting it is entirely appropriate to put the fountain in the centre as in the sense one would with many a portrait. Whether you break the rules or not depends on how high you aspire. My old music teacher used to say to me "When you are Beethoven you can break the rules, but for now you must do it according to the theory"!

It works for me, I think it's a good composition. What did Beethoven know about painting anyway!

A very well handled oil painting Carol. A stronger shadow would add to the background but I suppose you wanted all the attention to be on the fountain, which is beautifully painted.

This fountain is in one of the squares in town.The rules of composition say not to put the focal piont in the centre.Bugger the rules! this fountain would look a bit silly of to one side.
