"The Coal cellar"

What an interesting story and painting

Thank you Heather, I never submitted the story to publishing as we moved shortly after I had finished it; and the other day found the manuscript with these illustrations, still intact so when things over here are more settled may send it in, although I did write about 27 chapters. I can remember the day when I started this picture as was attending a drawing class and was fiddling with coloured charcoal, my hands were literally 'black bright'and oh well it was everywhere, felt I had emerged from the coal cellar too, lol! I think I did add coloured chalk too! Anyway, this was a picture I drew prior to writing about their brave escape on a raft down a canal behind the ghetto at Lodz refuge camp, Poland, 1942.

Yes very interesting story Angela..

A charcoal drawing I did for illustration purposes a while ago. Kristof was sculpting a doll from melting chocolate rations while in captivity during WW2 Poland. It was a birthday gift for his mother. This story was about bravery and courage during a time when this boy and one of his Hungarian friends managed to escape the refuge camp. Kristof and his mother and sister fled one night after the roll call at the camp.
