I painted this horse Mash with the elderly gentleman who was a Cotton Plantation manager and one day he took Mash to the Marshes but just before he reached the stony track road the horse sensed danger and reared up in a startled state. The horse sensed that the earth was sinking and later they discovered a sink-hole erupting but sadly the old man never recovered from his fall and Mash cantered away never to be seen again. Years later the old man's grandson visits the plantation and takes care of the horses and he dreams about Mash's Spirit where glimpses of periods in history are revealed in a dream and how the Cotton Plantation revived after the onset of the Civil war in Louisiana. I painted this illustration in monochrome for the story "The Horses of Keshin". Mash is revealed in each dream and protects the Ranch and its horses during a period of revival of the plantation.
