Saint-Tropez lay below me like scattered terracotta and white, the ochre bell tower of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption rising toward the sky — self-assured, as though it had stood there forever. Sails on the water, white sparks on the blue. Houses guarding a shared secret. I laid the paint with a knife and my fingers, because a brush was too calm for what I felt. Let this painting be your window to the south.
