Maths homework regularly turned me into a Fauve - how glad I am that those days are gone and that all I tried and failed to learn about algebra, logarithms, geometry et al has been utterly irrelevant in the last 56 or so years of my life, as I always knew they would be. Console your 9-year old: none of this matters a bit unless you intend to go to university for a science degree -you can either do it or you can't, and if you can't, there are other things to do which are probably just as satisfying if not more so. Give the child a brush, and let him or her put the teachers in their proper, subordinate, place.

Ah, well, both his parents did go to university for science degrees, and he certainly has the capability to follow... but we had a pleasant chat about whether he would want to paint with me or not, and the answer was, not right now, but maybe another time.

It is interesting to see the process. I think this will work very well.

this came leaping out at me. Having a desolutary scroll through the gallery and out this popped. Its the simplicity that I saw first. Its a case of you gets what you see. like lots.

Thank you, Gudrun, Sylvia. I hope it will work!

I was my own colourist here. 6-year-old at friend's house; 9-year-old grumpy with hayfever and maths homework. ~~~ But I'm thinking that the Fauvist influence is writ large here: patterns, brisk brushwork, simplification, outlines...
